About Shotokan Karate

What is Karate:

Karate is a weaponless form of self-defense. The word comes from two Japanese characters: kara (empty) and te (hand), meaning “empty hand.” Adding the suffix do transforms it into karate-do — “the way of Karate.”

Karate combines offensive and defensive techniques, including blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations. It trains the mind and body together, allowing even a small person to generate significant power.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Karate teaches peace, respect, and self-control. Students learn that martial arts are for self-defense and personal growth, not aggression. In fact, many parents notice that their children become calmer, more focused, and more respectful through training.

Not at all. Karate is designed to help children (and adults) develop coordination, balance, and strength over time. Many students begin with little or no athletic background and improve steadily as they train.

Yes. Safety is a top priority in every class. Techniques are introduced step by step, with close supervision from certified instructors. Sparring is only introduced when students are ready, and protective equipment is used as needed to minimize risks.

No! Karate meets you where you are. Beginners of all fitness levels are welcome. Training naturally builds strength, flexibility, endurance, and overall fitness at a steady pace that suits each individual.

For your first class, wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement (like a t-shirt and track pants or leggings). We train barefoot. Once you decide to continue, a traditional white karate uniform (gi) can be purchased through the dojo.

Like most karate styles, Shotokan uses a colored belt system to mark progress:

  • White Belt – Beginner starting point

  • Red Belt (9th Kyu)

  • Yellow Belt (8th Kyu)

  • Orange Belt (7th Kyu)

  • Green Belt (6th Kyu)

  • Purple Belts (5th & 4th Kyu)

  • Brown Belts (3rd, 2nd, 1st Kyu)

  • Black Belt (Dan ranks from 1st to 10th Dan)

Progression depends on skill, knowledge, consistency, and personal growth. Higher black belt ranks are earned through years of dedication, understanding, and contribution to the art.
